So very recently, (within the last week or so), British Pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline announced they had developed a Malaria vaccine for children. That's fantastic news for the children living in (mostly) sub-Saharan Africa.
Let's have a quick refresher about the vaccines we have to combat SARS-CoV-2:
- SARS-CoV-2 was first identified in October 2019, (Malaria has been around since forever)
- The first vaccine for SARS-CoV-2 took 9 months to develop, and another month to release to the general public (skipped animal testing)
- In Canada, there is a 95.8%survival rate from SARS-CoV-2
- In Canada, 85% of the deaths attributed to SARS-CoV-2 was among people 70 years or older
- There is currently no information available regarding deaths among people with comorbidities
Now lets look at the Malaria vaccine developed by GlaxoSmithKline:
- GlaxoSmithKline has been developing this vaccine 1989 (32 years)
- It was tested on over 800,000 children over the course of two years (2019 - 2021) in three different countries
- Approved by the W.H.O. in October 2021
Let's look at the main differences here - 9 months to develop the Covid19 vaccine vs 32 years to develop the Malaria vaccine. Which one do you think had more research? Which one do you think had more testing done? Which one do you think had animal testing done? Which one do you think had human testing done BEFORE worldwide distribution? That's just something for you to ponder.
